21 Mar Launching into Spring
And blessed spring has arrived … on the calendar at least. It’s still snowy and cold in Ottawa with more of the same in our week ahead. This weather is starting to make me antsy.
I completed my short story last weekend and am quite pleased with how it turned out. I submitted it to a call-out for mysteries set in Ottawa as a follow up to A Capital Mystery, an anthology spearheaded by Mike Martin which came out this year. He’s planning a second edition. There’s no guarantee that my story will be accepted, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Also this week, I finished getting all my tax information input into my spreadsheet, tallied up, and ready for the accountant. I was a bit more on top of it this year, making my life much easier.
As for writing, I’m slowly getting back into my latest manuscript. I plan to hammer out the last 10,000 words and then start going through the entire thing, looking to pull it together. I normally add another 10,000 words as I edit and this can take several weeks before it’s in decent enough shape to go first to my beta readers, and then to my editor, Allister Thompson.
My book club met last evening and the genre was any Reese’s pick. I read The Alice Network by Kate Quinn, the story alternating between two women and two time frames – 1915 and 1947. Eve is a spy working in France to gain intel on the Germans during the First World War, part of the Alice Network of women working silently behind the scenes for the British. Quite a lot of this book actually happened. It’s a well told story that stays with you. The selected genre for the next book club is Indigenous literature.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch my daughter Lisa’s Ted Talk, here’s the link. She’s done a terrific job! Her advice on how to handle that negative inner voice is well worth having a listen.
I’ll be stopping this blog in a few weeks for the summer months but will return next Saturday – I hope you check back in then. Have a great week!
