October 2020

Well this has been quite a week on the American political scene. We had a frankly disturbing presidential debate on Tuesday night, and received news yesterday that President and Melania Trump both tested positive for Coronavirus and he was flown to a hospital for treatment. Add in in the rising Coronavirus rates with Ottawa being in one of the ‘red’ zone, and we’ve entered new and unsettled territory.

I kept close to home again as recommended by Public Health. My outings include socially-distanced walks with my neighbours Carol and Kathryn, and trips to the grocery store. Not exactly a jet-setter life, but one that I’m getting used to as we enter the seventh month of the pandemic. The odd thing is that the days fill up and there always seems to be something to keep me busy.

I wrote this past Monday’s blog post for 7 Criminal Minds. The topic was whether or not we take liberties with grammar in the name of style. Everyone this week had a slightly different take so interesting to read the week’s posts. It would be great if you could leave a comment at the bottom of my post if you have the time and inclination.

I wrote less than normal this week. Sometimes it helps to take a break to recharge. I knew by Thursday when I was missing being inside the story that it was time to get back at my computer. Part of the reason for the break I think was that I was preparing myself to kill off a character whom I like a lot. While I figure this is the best thing to do at this point in the book, it’s harder to do than one might think. I’m now at 43,000 words.

The other item I knocked off my to-do list this week was reading the Code Four manuscript in order to send its co-author Frank Zafiro a quote/recommendation as they prepare for publication in a few months. Frank is an interesting guy in his own right, having worked in the police service for twenty years in Spokane, Washington, and retiring at the rank of captain. His book is set in Spokane and deals with a fictional force and some timely topics around policing. Frank has a podcast called Wrong Place, Write Crime and he interviewed me earlier this year. You can listen to the interview from the podcast page on my website. We’re also bloggers on 7 Criminal Minds albeit on separate weeks. You can check out his website to find out more about him and his writing.

So another relatively quiet week as I’m sure many of you are having as we all stay close to home. As many of you know, my family is big into curling. I’m starting in a league this Wednesday and will need to get used to all the new health protocols. We’re normally eight teams but only four are returning so it will be easier to social distance. I’ve also spent the past couple of weekends watching my daughter Lisa curl in Waterloo. She’s making her debut on her new team this weekend and you can watch their games on Jennifer Jones’s Facebook page if you’re looking for some entertainment. The next game is noon EDT today (Saturday).

This is a good week to rest and reflect on all the autumn beauty and to get outside and enjoy the season (between curling games 🙂 I wish you a good week ahead. Remember to wear a mask and stay safe!
